(Yes I am still alive. Just haven't LJ'd for ages)

We have a server at home. It stores many things we love. Mainly our entire photograph collection but also music, videos, personal documents, etc.  When the system drive of the server died last year, I thought "Mmm, if that had been a data drive, we would have lost a lot of precious stuff."  So I went out and bought a bunch of drives and a RAID controller.  To avoid getting too technical, it means that you store your data across all the drives but if one of the drives dies you don't lose anything.  If two of the drives die at once, you're stuffed - but that's really unlikely to happen.

So, last week, guess what?  One of the drives died.

We've been biting our collective nails ever since, buying a replacement drive and hoping that the RAID controller could rebuild everything back to normal.  Also hoping that another drive didn't die.

Well, it worked.  Everything is fine!  Hurrah for RAID!!!

However, as a belt and braces approach, I have also purchased an external back-up drive, and am currently copying the irreplaceable stuff onto it.  This will live in the fire safe, except once a month when I'll make a copy of the latest data.

We're now feeling a lot less stressed than we have been so far this week!
